I need to get this out of the way immediately because if I don’t, it’s going to bother all of us for the entire post. The couple’s names are Jordyn and Brian. My company is Jordan Brian Studios. I did not make this up. I could not have made this up. When Brian’s mom first reached out to book me for her son’s surprise proposal, I thought someone was pranking me. Nope. Just the universe having a really good day.
So buckle up, because this is the story of how Jordyn & Brian got engaged at a bookstore in Haddonfield, NJ, photographed and filmed by Jordan Brian. Try saying that five times fast.
Inkwood Books is an independent bookstore on Kings Highway in downtown Haddonfield, NJ. It has been part of the town’s commercial strip for years, known for its curated selections and community events. Haddonfield itself is one of the oldest towns in New Jersey, incorporated in 1695, and the historic district along Kings Highway is lined with Federal and Victorian-era architecture. For a proposal, the combination of the intimate bookstore space and the photogenic downtown streets right outside makes Haddonfield one of the most distinctive locations in the entire South Jersey area.
The Setup: A Baseball Player, a Bookworm, and a Plan Months in the Making
Here’s what you need to know about Jordyn and Brian. Brian is a semi-pro baseball player, the guy knows how to perform under pressure. Jordyn is a Philly sports social media personality, which means she’s funny, sharp, and plugged into the sports world in a major way. They’re a powerhouse couple. And Brian? He planned this proposal like a playoff game. Every detail mapped out. Every person in position. Zero room for error.
Jordyn (the bride, I know, stay with me) is an avid reader. Like, seriously loves books. So Brian and his family came up with a plan that was so perfectly tailored to her it still gives me chills thinking about it. They were going to close down Inkwood Books, a beloved independent bookstore right on Kings Highway in downtown Haddonfield, NJ, and surprise her inside.
But wait, it gets better. Brian had a custom book printed. An actual, physical book about their relationship. Their story, their memories, their journey together, all bound and printed like it belonged on a shelf at Inkwood. When Jordyn opened it and started reading, she completely lost it. Tears. The good kind. The kind that make everyone in the room start crying too, including the guy hiding behind the counter pretending to be a bookstore employee.
That guy was me.
Going Undercover at Inkwood Books
Okay, so here’s the part where being a surprise proposal photographer gets really fun. Brian’s family had coordinated with Inkwood Books to shut the store down for the proposal. Everyone, Brian, family members, friends, was already inside, hiding, when Jordyn arrived. The space was set up with flowers arranged around a reading area, and Brian’s custom book was placed right where she’d find it.
My job? Blend in. I was posted behind the front counter acting like I worked there. Just a casual bookstore employee, definitely not holding a camera, definitely not about to capture one of the most emotional moments of this woman’s life. My second photographer was at a back angle doing the same thing, just another “associate” helping out on a Sunday. We also had multiple hidden video cameras positioned throughout the store to capture every angle.
This is what I love about shooting proposals. It’s part photography, part filmmaking, part undercover operation. And when you plan it right, like Brian did, the results are absolutely incredible.
The Moment She Realized
Jordyn came into Inkwood Books with her mom, thinking it was just a casual outing. Maybe grab a new read, browse around, enjoy a crisp early March afternoon in one of South Jersey’s most charming downtown areas. Haddonfield in early spring is gorgeous, the brick storefronts, the tree-lined streets, that small-town energy that makes you want to slow down and soak it all in.
She found the book. She started reading it. And then she looked up and Brian was there.
I’m not going to lie, I’ve photographed a lot of proposals and this one hit different. The thought that went into it. The custom book. The fact that everyone she loved was hiding ten feet away, trying not to make a sound. When Brian got down on one knee, the whole room erupted. Family poured out from behind bookshelves. There were hugs, there were tears, there was laughing, it was pure chaos in the best possible way.
And because we had cameras rolling from multiple hidden positions, we caught every single second of it. The look on her face when she saw Brian. The gasp. The tears streaming down while she was still trying to process what was happening. The family rushing in. All of it. Photo and video, covered from every angle.
Portraits Around Downtown Haddonfield
After everyone caught their breath and the happy tears dried up (mostly), we headed outside to explore downtown Haddonfield for some portraits. If you’ve never spent time walking around Haddonfield, do yourself a favor and go. It’s one of those South Jersey towns that feels like it was designed for photography, historic architecture, gorgeous storefronts, mature trees lining the sidewalks, and this warm, welcoming energy that just shows up in every frame.
March in New Jersey can be hit or miss, but we lucked out. It was one of those cool, crisp late-winter days where the light is soft and flattering all afternoon. No harsh shadows, no squinting, just clean, natural light bouncing off the brick buildings and bare tree branches. Perfect conditions for candid, relaxed portraits.
Jordyn and Brian were so easy to work with. They were riding that post-proposal high where everything is funny and nothing can go wrong. We walked around, found cool spots, kept it loose. No stiff poses, no awkward “look at each other and pretend to laugh” direction. Just two people who were genuinely thrilled to be engaged, enjoying a beautiful afternoon in a beautiful town.
We grabbed some family photos too, because when your entire family just witnessed one of the best moments of your life and everyone’s already dressed nice, you’d be crazy not to take advantage of it. Those candid family shots right after a proposal are some of my favorite images to deliver. The joy is so raw and real.
Why Private Venue Proposals Are Worth It
I’ve shot proposals at restaurants, parks, beaches, rooftops, you name it. But there’s something special about a private venue proposal like this one at Inkwood Books. When you have the whole space to yourself, there’s no pressure. No strangers walking through the background. No noise. No wondering if the table next to you is going to start singing happy birthday at the worst possible moment.
Brian and his family thought of everything. The flowers, the custom book, the hidden cameras, the family hiding behind shelves. And because it was a closed venue, I could position myself and my second shooter exactly where we needed to be without worrying about blowing the surprise. The bookstore staff at Inkwood were incredible partners in making this happen, shoutout to them for being so cool about the whole thing.

I still can’t get over this. Jordyn and Brian. Jordan Brian. If this isn’t proof that some things are just meant to be, I don’t know what is. When Brian’s mom first emailed me, I actually re-read her message three times because I thought I was misunderstanding something. But no, the universe just decided to have some fun with this one, and honestly, I’m here for it.
Congratulations, Jordyn and Brian. Your proposal was one of the most creative, thoughtful, perfectly-executed surprises I’ve ever had the privilege of capturing. The custom book alone would have been enough to make this unforgettable, but the whole package, the closed bookstore, the hidden family, the flowers, the beautiful day in Haddonfield, it was something truly special.
And yes, for the record: Jordan Brian Studios photographing Jordyn and Brian’s proposal is the single greatest name coincidence in the history of wedding photography. I will accept no arguments on this.
