There’s something about Long Beach Island that just makes everything feel right. Kyle and Nicole live in San Francisco, California, but they were spending vacation time down the shore in Brant Beach. And honestly? So here was the plan: I parked myself on that bench with my camera hidden underneath a beach towel. Just a dude sitting on a dune, enjoying the view. Nothing to see here. Meanwhile, my second shooter was down on the beach, also blending in with the crowd.
And then it happened: Kyle and Nicole walked right past me. Like, RIGHT past me. Nicole had absolutely no clue. She didn’t even glance in my direction. Once they walked by and got to their spot, I pulled the camera out from under the towel and the discreet documentation began.
I’ve done a lot of surprise proposals in my career, and every single one gets my heart racing. But there’s something about hiding in plain sight, sitting on a bench in broad daylight with your camera wrapped in a towel like some kind of beach spy, that really takes the adrenaline to another level.
The Moment She Said Yes
Kyle timed it beautifully. Late August on LBI means golden hour hits like a dream, that warm, amber light that makes everything look like a movie. The sun was getting low over the dunes, painting the whole beach in this incredible glow.
He dropped to one knee, and from my vantage point on the dune and my second shooter’s angle on the beach, we captured it all: every reaction, every tear, every “oh my God” moment. Nicole’s face went through about fifteen different emotions in about three seconds flat. Shock, disbelief, pure joy, happy tears, the whole range.
And then came my favorite part: the moment she realized there were photographers there. That second wave of surprise when the “wait, you had someone capture this?!” hits is always priceless. Kyle had thought of everything.
The Mini Engagement Session: Brant Beach Golden Hour
