ICONA Avalon is one of the few shore venues where the weather becomes part of the story, and I have photographed it in all of it. Thick morning fog rolling off the water, full July heat, that low gold October light, and the days the rain plan had to carry the whole afternoon. This is not the recap of one wedding. It is everything I have learned shooting weddings at this venue, gathered in one place, so you know how the day actually flows and where the strongest photographs happen long before you book.
By the end you’ll know how a wedding day flows at this venue, where the best photographs happen, and the few timeline decisions that separate a rushed day from a relaxed one.

ICONA Avalon Wedding Venue Overview
ICONA Avalon is a luxury resort that still feels like the beach. Polished, but nobody is standing on ceremony. What sets it apart from almost every other Shore venue is the private stretch of sand right off the property. Your ceremony and portraits happen on a beach your guests have to themselves, not between strangers’ umbrellas.
Avalon the town matters too. It’s one of the quietest, most upscale towns on the Jersey Shore, and that carries into the wedding itself. Spring and fall here feel almost private.
Why ICONA Avalon Works as a Full Wedding Weekend
Treat ICONA Avalon as a wedding weekend, not a single event. Most couples arrive the day before, check in, and do the rehearsal dinner at the Windrift next door or at one of the on-site spots. Nobody drives anywhere. Everyone settles in.
That pays off on the wedding day. When most of your guests wake up in the building, the morning has no scramble to it. People wander down to breakfast, find the ceremony on time, and the whole day runs looser. The easiest ICONA Avalon weddings I’ve photographed were all planned this way.
ICONA Avalon vs. ICONA Diamond Beach (Wildwood)
ICONA Avalon leans luxury. High-end vibe, private beach, upscale Avalon town feel, manicured grounds.
ICONA Diamond Beach is more relaxed. Classic Jersey Shore energy, beach tents for ceremony and cocktail hour, nostalgia-driven.
Sunset: Avalon offers elevated dune-top sunset views AND a bay-side marina dock for golden-hour portraits. Two completely different looks in the same evening.
Town vibe: Avalon is quieter and more upscale than Wildwood. That carries through to the entire wedding experience.
The deciding factor for most couples: How formal do you want the energy? Avalon is elevated. Wildwood is nostalgic. Both are incredible.
Renovated for 2026: Bar, Lounge, and Front Desk
ICONA Avalon redid its main public spaces in 2026. The front desk, the bar, and the fireplace lounge all changed, so the indoor shots in older galleries no longer match what your guests will walk into. Here is the current look.
The new front desk sets the tone the second people arrive. White counter, teal fluted base, and the ICONA logo on a mosaic wall. It photographs well when the wedding party first walks in, and it makes a clean backdrop for a quick welcome shot.
The bar got the biggest change. An ocean-wave mural runs the length of the room, the ceiling went deep teal, and a sculpted wave-slat wall divides the bar from the seating. When the weather pushes cocktail hour inside, this is where most of the candids happen now, and the light in here is soft and easy to work with.
The fireplace lounge off the lobby is the calm one. Woven chairs, a blue watercolor rug, and a lit fireplace under the sailboat painting. It is an easy place to pull a couple aside for a few relaxed portraits when the beach is off the table.
Getting Ready at ICONA Avalon
Smaller wedding parties usually get ready in the ocean-facing suites. The morning light in those rooms is some of the best I work with anywhere, and the balcony is right there when someone needs a quiet minute.
Bigger parties take the Spa-lon suites, which have the floor space for hair and makeup without people stepping over each other. Either way, lock in your room early. The walk between rooms, portrait spots, and the ceremony eats more time than couples expect.
Pro tip: Keep the window shades open while you’re getting ready. The natural light in these rooms beats any artificial setup, and you’ll see the difference in the photographs.
Ceremony Options at ICONA Avalon
Beach Ceremony
- Best in fall and spring for privacy, foot traffic is minimal, the beach feels personal
- Plan extra walking time from the hotel to the ceremony location
- Great light later in the day, afternoon ceremonies look beautiful with the sun angle
- Wind can be a factor, always have a backup plan and consider which direction your ceremony faces relative to the sun
Indoor Ceremony (Rain / Cold / Wind Plan)
- Ceremony moves into the cocktail hour space when weather doesn’t cooperate
- After the ceremony, the room flips for cocktail hour, the staff handles this smoothly and keeps the day on track
- Best indoor photo spots: sailboat wall, lobby, suites, ocean-facing balconies
Honest take on rain: Some of my favorite ICONA Avalon photos have come from rainy day weddings. Moody skies create incredible backdrops, and the indoor spaces here photograph beautifully. Don’t stress about rain, have a plan and trust the staff.
First Look Locations at ICONA Avalon
Most of my ICONA Avalon couples do a first look, and the dune crossing onto the beach is my favorite spot for it. It’s private, the light holds up most of the day, and I can shoot it from the ground or from up in the building for a totally different angle on the same moment.
In late September and October, yellow flowers bloom along those dunes. Off-season is when this spot is at its best, when the beach is empty and nobody walks through the frame.
Best Portrait Locations at ICONA Avalon
I’ve shot enough ICONA Avalon weddings to know exactly where to go and when. Here are the spots I hit every single time.
The Beach: Ocean and Dunes
Two completely different looks without moving more than 50 feet. Face toward the ocean for wide, dramatic horizon shots. Turn around and shoot into the dunes for a natural, textured backdrop with tall grass and sand. Both work. Both look incredible.
The Sailboat Painting Wall
Hands-down the best indoor portrait location at ICONA Avalon. Works for couples, wedding parties, and families. The light is good and the painting gives the photographs some personality without stealing the frame. It’s also my go-to on rainy days and at midday when the outdoor light is harsh.
Hidden Fall Foliage Spot
Less than a mile from the venue, there’s a hidden spot with rolling hills, fall color, and a unique shoreline path that gives couples a full fall look while maintaining a coastal feel. Late October to early November only. Most couples don’t know this exists, ask me about it on your planning call.
Sunset Portraits at ICONA Avalon: Beach and Bay
One of the biggest advantages of ICONA Avalon? You get two completely different sunsets in one venue. The resort sits on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the bay, which means golden hour gives you options that most Jersey Shore venues can only dream about.
You can shoot on the beach with the ocean behind you, then walk five minutes to the marina and catch the sun dropping over the bay. Two totally different looks, same evening, no travel time.
Bay Sunset Portraits on the Marina Dock
The bay side is where the magic happens. The ICONA marina dock gives you clean sightlines to the western sky, and when the sun drops behind the mainland, the colors are something else. Golds, pinks, and purples reflecting off the water while you stand at the end of the dock with nobody else around.
The dock itself works as a leading line in compositions, and the weathered pilings add texture without being distracting.
Pro tip: Bay sunsets are more reliable than ocean sunsets for color. The western sky over the bay gives you that full gradient almost every time, even on partly cloudy days. Clouds actually help, they catch the light and turn the whole sky into a painting. I always build a 20-minute window into the timeline for this spot.
Beach Golden Hour on the Ocean Side
The beach side gives you a completely different vibe. You won’t get the sun dropping into the ocean on the east coast, but golden hour light on the dunes and sand is warm, soft, and incredibly flattering for portraits.
The best beach sunset shots happen about 30–45 minutes before actual sunset, when the light is low enough to create long shadows and that warm glow across the sand. I usually recommend doing bay sunset first, then swinging to the beach for the last few minutes of warm ambient light. You get both looks in about 20 minutes total.
Family Portraits and Wedding Party Photos
Family portraits are best handled with a clear plan. I break them into shorter location-based segments rather than one long standing-around session. Here’s every spot at ICONA Avalon and what each one delivers.
Beach: Facing the Ocean
Extended family portraits work best here immediately after the ceremony. Wide open backdrop, plenty of room to spread out, and the ocean behind the group.
Beach: Facing the Sand Dunes
Turn the group around and the photograph changes entirely. Tall grass, natural texture, no horizon line cutting through anyone’s head. Great for larger groups where you want everyone visible.
Sailboat Painting Wall
The best indoor family portrait spot at ICONA Avalon. Immediate family and couple-with-parents shots work especially well here. The painting gives the frame something to look at without pulling attention from the people in it.
Room Suite Deck / Balcony
The suite balconies overlook the ocean and make for a beautiful, elevated portrait spot. Open sky and water behind the group, nothing like the beach-level shots.
By the Pool
The pool area gives you a polished, resort backdrop for smaller family groupings or wedding party photos. Great option during cocktail hour when the ceremony space is being flipped.
Aloha Suite
The Aloha Suite is the groom’s getting ready space, but it doubles as a great portrait location, large, bright, and full of personality. Family groupings and groomsmen shots work really well in here.
Fog at ICONA Avalon: Fog is common in spring, early summer, and some fall mornings. It creates a soft, dreamy atmosphere that removes distractions and focuses everything on the couple. Fog typically clears by late morning or midday. Some of the most memorable ICONA Avalon weddings have happened on foggy mornings.
Weather Planning at ICONA Avalon
Rain Plan
Ceremonies move into the cocktail hour space. Indoor portrait locations include the sailboat wall, lobby, suites, and bridal suite. The staff handles quick room flips, I’ve seen them set up an indoor ceremony in under 20 minutes.
Wind Strategy
Wind direction matters more than wind speed. Onshore wind is managed by positioning on the venue side of the dunes. Offshore wind is often naturally blocked by the dunes. The bay-side marina is also a great option when the beach is too breezy for portraits.
Summer Heat
Summer weddings benefit from water, shade, and shorter portrait breaks. The ocean breeze keeps things comfortable most days, extreme heat is relatively rare here. Portraits get broken into short segments throughout the day.
Off-Season Cold
Fall and early spring weddings mean planning for layers, warm drinks, and shorter outdoor sessions balanced with beautiful indoor portraits. But here’s the honest truth: I like planning for the worst, and the worst almost never shows up. I’ve photographed November weddings at ICONA Avalon where it was 75 degrees on the beach. You never know what you’re going to get, and we’ve had amazing weather at pretty much every wedding here. Plan smart, then expect to be pleasantly surprised. The off-season light is incredible and the beach is completely yours.
Fog
Avalon sits on a barrier island, and ocean fog rolls in here, especially in spring, early summer, and some fall mornings. When it happens, you got lucky. Fog wraps the beach in soft, even light. No harsh shadows, nobody squinting, and the whole shoreline goes quiet and private. I photographed an entire ICONA Avalon wedding in heavy fog, and those images are some of my favorites I’ve ever made at this venue. Read the Kellie & Karl fog story below, it’s the best proof I can offer that weather you can’t control can still turn into photographs you’ll never forget.
Night Portraits at ICONA Avalon
Night portraits are the most skipped photographs at ICONA Avalon, and couples who skip them usually wish they hadn’t. Five to eight minutes outside during the reception. That’s all it takes, and it doubles as a breather from the dance floor.
The lit building exterior and the beach club are the spots. The beach club usually has string lights and fire pits going, and plenty of couples drift down there with their guests after the reception ends anyway.
Planning Tips for a Smooth ICONA Avalon Wedding
- Do a first look. The cocktail hour at ICONA Avalon is too good to miss. Do a first look, knock out your couple and wedding party photos before the ceremony, and actually enjoy the party.
- Build 20 minutes into your timeline for bay sunset. The marina dock is the single best photo opportunity at this venue. Don’t let it get scheduled out.
- Plan walking time. The hotel-to-beach walk is longer than most couples expect. Build extra time into transitions, especially getting to the ceremony location.
- Use both sunsets. Bay first, then the beach. Twenty minutes gets you both.
- Ask about the fall foliage spot. It’s less than a mile away, available late October through early November. Most couples don’t know about it. It’s worth it.
- Consider off-season. September, October, May, and June all deliver gorgeous weather, minimal beach crowds, and that soft warm light that makes portraits look amazing.
- Book guests at the hotel. Having the majority of your guests staying on-site is what makes the ICONA Avalon experience work. The whole weekend feels more present and connected.
A Real ICONA Avalon Story: Kellie & Karl in the Fog
The fog on Kellie and Karl’s wedding day was so dreamy. I’ll be honest, I was a little concerned at first. They wanted to shoot down by the fisherman’s pier, and I couldn’t, because I could not see it. We kept it soft in the background instead. I couldn’t even photograph the wedding party out on the beach. I couldn’t see them. So we moved everyone onto one of the boardwalks and shot there.
And then the fog turned into the best thing about the day. It looked like Kellie and Karl were walking on a cloud. Walking into clouds. Nobody was expecting it, and it is stunning. In all my years shooting the Jersey Shore, I’ve only been on a beach in fog like that one other time, and that day was just as dreamy.
People freak out about rain on a wedding day. But look how cool rain looks in photographs, and look how cool this fog looks. You can’t order weather like this. The conditions you don’t plan for are usually the ones that give you something nobody else has.
Here is their full wedding day, start to finish.
There are not enough positive words I can say about Kellie & Karl and their Icona Avalon wedding. They have been phenomenal to work with, be with and shoot with! They are light-hearted, laid back, always positive and full of humor. You can view some of their GTKY session online here. I have footage of them from the sky of them jumping into the surf in Wildwood, NJ. But we are here to talk about their wedding day.

About Icona Avalon
Icona Avalon sits right on Dune Drive in Cape May County, one of only a handful of true oceanfront wedding venues on the Jersey Shore. The hotel was a full ground-up rebuild in 2007 by Eustace Mita, who turned a dated motel block into a contemporary resort with ocean-facing ballroom windows and a beach ceremony deck. The best part for couples like Kellie and Karl: the ceremony spot is a flat 30-second walk from the cocktail hour, which means foggy beach mornings do not turn into stressful travel-time problems. Fun planning fact: Avalon’s protected beach is one of the widest in New Jersey, so even with the fog rolling in, you get a long sand runway for portraits before the ceremony.

The bridal suite at Icona Avalon
I need to start by expressing my absolute love for this blue velvet couch they chose to put in the bridal suite for all brides that have a Icona Avalon wedding. I wanted to drive my car up, load it in and take that puppy home. Space is great! It is large enough to fit 5-10 girls comfortably with hair/makeup artists. The front windows provide tons of natural light. The flooring is this gorgeous color textured wood. It is great for doing flat lay/detail photographs.

History of Icona in Avalon
This was the first time I have been to the Icona Resort in Avalon, NJ. Originally it was the Golden Inn until it was purchased by Icona Resorts in 2015 and underwent a 15million dollar renovation starting in 2016. The renovations turned the classic hotel into a modern contemporary hotel in South Jersey. The rooms are simply wow! They renovated the back by the pool where they have ceremonies onsite there. The inside when you walk in is a mix of pure white minimalism with touches that remind you that you are on the beach.

“After talking to Jordan on the phone the first time we knew he’d be the perfect photographer for our day – it was so easy to talk and joke with him. One of the main things we wanted out of our wedding photographer (besides amazing photos, obviously) was an easy connection. We wanted to feel as comfortable as possible and have our true emotions captured. Jordan was truly amazing to work with.” ~Kellie & Karl

Groom Preps at Icona Avalon
Karl along with a few of his brothers, friends, and family had their groom preps in their suite that overlooked the beach. The guys were laid back, fun and were ready to party! Kellie got Karl a surprise white dinner coat for the reception as part of her gift. It was an incredible surprise and looked GQ cool for the evening. I wish more groomsmen did this. Such a great look!
Bride & Groom first look
I love the sand dunes and entrance onto the beach when I do first looks down the shore. The fog rolled in but the sun just came out which started to burn off some of the fog. Karl had the best expression when he saw Kellie for the first time. plus he was so happy that he couldn’t stop laughing. She was like why are you laughing.
Beach wedding portraits Avalon, NJ
We went down a few blocks to shoot over by the pier. When we got on the beach it was so foggy that we had to pull an audible and shoot with the bridal party on the boardwalk. I did first do a few dreamy shots on black and white film of the groom and a bit with the couple. The boardwalk was fun and just wide enough to fit the bridal party on.
This was the photograph they selected for their Canvas Wall Art Piece!

Notice the bridesmaid on the far left. She sneezed right on the bridesmaid next to her 3 times in a row! I almost fell on the boardwalk laughing so hard.

When you find two complete strangers on the beach….You ask them to come in for a quick photobomb with the groom

Family Formals at Icona
Family formals are some of the most important photographs that I captured on the day. However, they need to be fun, quick, have a simple background, good lighting, and natural expressions. We had to place to captured these at the hotel and it was blazing sun in most spots. I found a little entrance way outside by where the ceremony location is by the pool. We rocked these in 10 minutes. This always needs to be done in a crunch sometimes as the guests start arriving and we do not want to shoot formals during the cocktail hour. It is always a frustrating nightmare for the bride to do that.
I love this little flare from the film on the edges!

Icona Avalon Wedding Reception
Damn, they had a fun reception! Angela Nicole Designs did an amazing job with the decor in the room. They also did a stunning job with the bridal bouquets and ceremony decor. You will also love the contemporary look of the wood flooring for your Icona Avalon Wedding.
The first dance concluded with a surprise scooter ride from the bride’s niece and flower girl. This might have been the cutest thing ever for a first dance! Special thanks to the amazing Slippery Band. I have known them for years. Absolutely great people to work with!
The best man’s speech was also pretty epic. The two brothers talking about how they used to beat and destroy Karl. After their speech, I was just thinking to myself and tough Karl must be after some of these stories! They put him in a piece of luggage and threw him down the stairs! haha!

Karl’s brothers absolutely destroyed it! Great best man/men toast!
I must say the Icona is an amazing jersey shore venue. Stylish, contemporary but not stuffy and a touch of laid-back NJ. I had the best time with Kellie and Karl. Their album turned about incredible and I absolutely loved the wall art canvas piece they got of them romantically walking together into the foggy mist
The craziest that they had a foggy day at the beach and they chose the light grey leather called “fog”! Perfect for this foggy Icona Avalon Wedding…

Frequently Asked Questions About ICONA Avalon Weddings
How many guests can ICONA Avalon accommodate for a wedding?
ICONA Avalon can host weddings from intimate gatherings of 50 guests up to larger celebrations of approximately 200–300 guests. The main reception space handles most weddings comfortably, and they offer flexible configurations depending on your ceremony and cocktail hour setup.
What happens if it rains during my ICONA Avalon beach ceremony?
Rain plans are built into every ICONA Avalon wedding. If weather turns, ceremonies move indoors to the ballroom or covered patio areas. The venue staff is experienced with quick transitions, I’ve seen them flip a ceremony setup in under 20 minutes. Some of my favorite ICONA Avalon photos have come from rainy day weddings.
When is the best time of year for an ICONA Avalon wedding?
September and October are the sweet spot. Warm weather without peak summer humidity, smaller beach crowds, gorgeous fall light for photos, and often the best sunset colors of the year. Late May and June are also excellent, everything is green and blooming and the days are long. Summer weddings are beautiful but expect more beach traffic and higher temperatures.
Does ICONA Avalon have indoor ceremony options?
Yes. Indoor ceremonies take place in the cocktail hour space, which has large windows with natural light. Many couples choose a beach ceremony with an indoor backup plan, but fully indoor ceremonies work beautifully here, especially in the cooler months.
How much does an ICONA Avalon wedding cost?
Most couples should budget between $15,000 and $40,000 for the venue and catering depending on guest count, time of year, and package selections. Peak summer dates and Saturday evenings are higher. I recommend reaching out to their events team directly for current pricing, they’re responsive and helpful with custom quotes.
What is the best sunset photo location at ICONA Avalon?
The marina dock on the bay side is hands-down the best sunset photo spot at ICONA Avalon. The western-facing view gives you a direct sightline to the sunset over the bay, with gorgeous golden and pink reflections on the water. The dock creates beautiful leading lines in the composition. I always build a 20-minute window into the timeline for bay sunset portraits, it’s the single best opportunity for dramatic photos at this venue.
Can I have my wedding ceremony on the beach at ICONA Avalon?
Absolutely, beach ceremonies are one of the biggest draws here. The venue handles the setup with chairs, an arch or arbor, and aisle decor right on the sand. The ocean backdrop is incredible for ceremonies, especially in the late afternoon light. Keep in mind that wind can be a factor, always have a backup plan and think about which direction your ceremony faces relative to the sun.
What are the getting ready rooms like at ICONA Avalon?
The getting ready suites at ICONA Avalon are some of the best on the Jersey Shore. The rooms overlook either the ocean or the bay, so you get gorgeous natural background light throughout the morning. The Spa-lon suites are ideal for larger wedding parties, plenty of space for hair, makeup, and getting dressed without feeling cramped.
What is the difference between ICONA Avalon and ICONA Diamond Beach in Wildwood?
Same company, completely different experience. ICONA Avalon leans luxury, upscale, polished, private beach, elevated Avalon vibe. ICONA Diamond Beach in Wildwood is more nostalgic Jersey Shore, relaxed energy, beach tents right on the sand, the kind of place you grew up going every summer. Both are incredible for weddings. The choice usually comes down to the energy you want.
How far ahead should I book a wedding photographer for ICONA Avalon?
For peak summer Saturdays, 12 to 18 months out is the right call. Shoulder season dates in May and September are slightly more flexible but still book early.
When’s the best time of day for couple portraits at ICONA Avalon?
I aim for the 45 to 60 minutes before sunset on the beach. The light gets warm, the sand is less crowded, and we have time to step from the ceremony space to the boardwalk angles without rushing.
Have you photographed weddings at ICONA Avalon before?
Yes, multiple ICONA Avalon weddings across different seasons. I know the timing on the beach, the rooftop, the ballroom, and the back hallways that get you from one to the next without losing light.
Is ICONA Avalon a good fit for an out-of-town guest list?
Very much. The resort itself handles guest rooms, the beach is steps from the venue, and Avalon’s restaurants and shops are walkable for welcome dinners and morning-after brunches.
