I need to tell you about one of my absolute favorite proposals I’ve ever photographed. Simone and Tom. Sea Isle City. Summer 2021. The world was just coming back to life after COVID, people were finally getting to celebrate the things they’d been putting on hold, and the energy that summer was something else. Everyone was soaking up every single moment like they’d been given extra time on the clock.
And Tom? Tom had a plan.
As a surprise proposal photographer based in South Jersey, I’ve done my share of creative setups. But this one required a level of undercover work that honestly made me feel like I was in a spy movie. A very sandy, sunscreen-scented spy movie.
Sea Isle City sits on a barrier island in Cape May County, about 12 miles north of Wildwood and 70 miles south of Philadelphia. The town itself was developed as a resort in the 1880s, and the beach has been a draw ever since. What makes it a great proposal location is the layout: long, open stretches of sand that stay relatively uncrowded away from the main access points, and a western orientation that gives you a full sunset view from the beach. The light here at golden hour hits the water straight-on, which is exactly what you want for proposal photographs.
The Setup: Beach Chair, Bathing Suit, Camera Under a Towel
Here’s the thing about photographing a surprise proposal on a public beach: you can’t exactly show up with a giant camera bag and a telephoto lens and not blow the whole thing. So I had to get creative.
I walked down to the Sea Isle City beach well before Tom and Simone were supposed to arrive. I was wearing a bathing suit. Just a regular dude at the shore. I set up a beach chair, plopped down facing the ocean, and tucked my camera under a towel on my lap. To anyone walking by, I was just another guy enjoying the view.
But before I sat down, I did something that ended up being the key to the whole thing. I walked to the exact spot where I wanted the proposal to happen and I marked it in the sand. Right there. X marks the spot. Then I texted Tom a photo of the mark, showing him exactly where to bring Simone, which direction she should be facing, everything. That way the light would be perfect, the composition would be right, and she’d have zero idea what was about to happen.
Tom nailed it. He walked Simone right to the spot like it was the most casual thing in the world. Just a couple taking a stroll on the beach at sunset. Nothing to see here.
The Moment She Said Yes
I was sitting in that beach chair, camera hidden, heart pounding. When Tom got down on one knee, I started shooting from under the towel at first, and then the towel came off and I was fully in photographer mode, but Simone was so wrapped up in the moment she didn’t even notice me. She didn’t notice anything except Tom.
The surprise was complete. Like, full-on hands-over-mouth, tears, the whole thing. This is why I love what I do. You can’t fake that reaction. You can’t stage it. You just have to be ready for it, and honestly? Being hidden in a beach chair twenty feet away in swim trunks is about as ready as it gets.
I didn’t interact with them at all during the proposal itself. That moment belonged entirely to them. I just stayed in my spot and let my lens do the work. No direction, no posing, no interruption. Pure reaction. Pure joy. That’s the whole point.
Then the Families Showed Up (and the Dogs!)
Just when Simone thought the surprises were over. Nope. Both families came out from wherever they’d been hiding and absolutely swarmed them. The hugs, the happy tears, the chaos of everyone trying to congratulate them at once. It was beautiful.
And then the dogs showed up. Because of course they did. I don’t know what it is about Jersey Shore proposals and dogs, but it’s becoming a pattern I am very much here for. There is genuinely nothing better than a newly engaged couple on a beach at sunset surrounded by their families and their dogs. That’s the whole vibe. That’s the dream.
The Golden Hour Mini Session
After all the excitement, once everyone had a chance to hug and cry and hug some more, we did a mini portrait session right there on the beach. And the sky that evening? I still think about it. We were right at that magic window, just after sunset, and the sky turned into this incredible palette of soft pinks, light blues, and deep purples. The kind of light that makes you look like you’re living inside a painting.
Sea Isle City gave us everything that night. The beach was gorgeous, the light was unreal, and Simone and Tom were just radiating happiness. When a couple is that in love and that relaxed, my job becomes incredibly easy. I just follow the energy and press the button.
That post-sunset light on the Jersey Shore is genuinely some of the best light I get to work with all year. The hour before sunset is great, the 30-minute mark is the sweet spot, and even 15 minutes after the sun dips below the horizon. Still gorgeous.. Those pinks and purples were hanging around like they didn’t want the night to end either.
Why the “Hidden Photographer” Approach Works So Well
I get asked a lot about how surprise proposals actually work. Like, logistically: how do you capture something that’s supposed to be a total secret? And this proposal is my go-to example because it shows exactly how the process comes together.
It starts with planning. Tom and I talked through the whole thing beforehand. I scouted the location, figured out where the light would be best at that time of day, and picked the exact spot for the proposal. Then I gave Tom super clear instructions, a photo of the mark in the sand, which direction to face Simone, the whole thing.
Then on the day, I go full incognito. In this case, that meant a beach chair, a bathing suit, and a towel. No camera bag. No assistant. No signs that say “PHOTOGRAPHER HERE.” Just a guy at the beach. That’s the whole disguise. And it works every single time because nobody looks twice at someone sitting in a beach chair at the shore.
The result is that the reaction is real. Simone had no idea. Not a clue. And those photographs, the raw surprise, the tears, the laughter. That’s the stuff you’re going to frame. That’s the stuff you’re going to show your kids someday.
Post-COVID Proposals Hit Different
I have to mention this because it’s a real part of this story. Summer 2021 was the first summer where things felt somewhat normal again. People had been waiting, waiting to gather, waiting to celebrate, waiting to take the next step. There was this collective exhale happening everywhere, and proposals that summer carried this extra layer of emotion.
Tom had been holding onto this plan. Simone had been waiting for life to start moving forward again. And when it all came together on that beach in Sea Isle City at golden hour with both families hiding nearby and their dogs ready to crash the party. Man. It was a lot of feelings. The good kind.
