Sunset, Sand, and a Ring: Adam & Shayna’s Surprise Proposal at ICONA Avalon

There’s a special kind of chaos that happens behind the scenes of a surprise proposal. The good kind. The kind where you’re ducking behind beach chairs, praying the wind doesn’t knock over the flower arrangements, and secretly taping a microphone to a guy’s chest in a hotel bathroom while his girlfriend is in the next room wondering why everyone’s being weird.

That’s exactly how Adam and Shayna’s proposal story started. And honestly? It was one of the most perfectly executed surprises I’ve ever been part of.

ICONA Avalon sits at the quieter northern end of Avalon, a Cape May County beach town known for understated wealth and wide, uncrowded sand. The boutique hotel opened in its current form in 2012 after a full reimagining of the old Avalon Manor property. Direct private beach access, a staff that handles event logistics without fanfare, and a beachfront orientation that catches late-afternoon light from a low southwestern angle make it one of the more photographer-friendly spots on the Jersey Shore. August here runs about eight degrees cooler than inland Philadelphia, and the ocean breeze is consistent enough that hair and fabric move well in every frame.

The Setup: Sneaking Around ICONA Avalon

Adam reached out to me a few weeks before the big day with a plan that was equal parts romantic and covert ops. He wanted to propose to Shayna on the beach at ICONA Avalon, right at sunset on a warm August Saturday. He had flowers, a backdrop, champagne, and his entire family ready to jump out and celebrate. All he needed was someone to capture it all without Shayna catching on.

That someone was me. And I was all in.

As a surprise proposal photographer, I’ve learned that the magic is in the preparation. You don’t just show up and hope for the best. You arrive early, you scout the light, you figure out where the wind is coming from, and you make sure every single detail is positioned so the photos and video look incredible, even when the couple has no idea you’re there.

I got to ICONA Avalon well before Shayna was supposed to arrive. Adam’s family was already there: nervous, excited, trying not to blow the surprise by being too obvious. We set up the floral backdrop and made sure it was angled so the sunset light would hit them perfectly. August on the Jersey Shore means golden hour starts painting the sky around 7:45, and we had maybe a 30-minute window where the light would be absolutely unreal.

Wind direction matters more than people think at beach proposals. We positioned the flowers and backdrop so an onshore breeze wouldn’t send everything flying. Shayna’s hair would catch the wind naturally, and if you’ve seen these photographs, you know it ended up looking gorgeous.

The Secret Mic: Because Audio Changes Everything

Here’s the thing about proposal videos: the visual is only half the story. What Adam says in that moment? That’s the part that makes you cry when you watch it back five years later.

So I pulled Adam into the restroom at ICONA Avalon and wired him up. Sticky tape, a tiny lav mic tucked under his shirt, the whole deal. Shayna had zero idea. Adam played it cool (well, as cool as a guy can play it when he’s about to change his whole life), and we got him mic’d and back out before anyone noticed.

I set up two video angles and two photography angles. One camera was capturing the wide shot: the ocean, the sunset, the whole setup on the sand. The second was tight on Adam and Shayna, ready to catch every single expression. For photo, I had a similar two-angle approach so I could shoot both their faces and the full scene without missing a beat.

This is why I always tell people: if you’re planning a surprise proposal, having both photo and video is a game-changer. Photos freeze the moment. Video lets you relive the sound of the waves, the shakiness in his voice, the exact second she realizes what’s happening. You want both. Trust me.

The Moment: Shayna Had No Idea

The plan was simple and brilliant. Shayna thought she was heading down to the beach with her family for a casual evening stroll. Nothing unusual. It’s August in Avalon. Everybody walks the beach at sunset.. That’s the beauty of a Jersey Shore proposal. The setting does the work for you. Nobody suspects a thing when you suggest walking toward the water.

As Shayna came around and saw the setup: the flowers, the candles, Adam standing there in the warm evening light, and you could see it hit her in stages. Confusion first. Then recognition. Then the full wave of emotion as she realized exactly what was happening.

Adam dropped to one knee right there in the sand, the ocean behind them turning gold and pink, and the mic caught every word. I’m not going to share what he said. That belongs to them, but I will tell you it was the kind of honest, from-the-gut stuff that makes you remember why you love doing this work.

Shayna said yes. Obviously. And then she laughed. And cried. And did that thing where you cover your mouth with both hands because your brain can’t process how happy you are. It’s my favorite reaction. Every single time.

Popping Champagne on the Beach

This is the part where it goes from emotional to full-on celebration. Adam had champagne ready, because of course he did. The man planned everything, and they popped it right there on the beach with the last of the sunset light glowing behind them.

There’s something about champagne foam catching the golden hour light that just works on camera. The fizz, the laughter, the two of them grinning at each other like they just got away with something amazing. Those are the frames you end up printing and hanging on your wall.

The Family Surprise

Just when Shayna thought it was over, just when she was starting to catch her breath and stare at the ring and process everything, Adam’s family came pouring out onto the beach. Parents, siblings, everyone who’d been hiding and trying not to peek.

That second wave of surprise? It’s almost better than the proposal itself. Shayna spun around, saw everyone running toward them across the sand, and completely lost it again. More tears, more laughing, a wall of group hugs right there in the fading light.

I kept shooting through all of it. The candid stuff: the family hugs, the mom wiping her eyes, the dad shaking Adam’s hand. Those end up being some of the most important images from the entire evening. They’re the ones that tell the real story. Not just two people getting engaged, but two families coming together.

Why ICONA Avalon Is Perfect for a Surprise Proposal

I’ve photographed proposals and weddings at many Jersey Shore venues, and ICONA Avalon is one of those spots that just makes everything easier. The beach is gorgeous. The sunset views are wide open. No buildings blocking the light, no boardwalk crowds wandering through your shot.. The property itself gives you plenty of space to set up without being obvious, and the staff is used to working with photographers and event setups.

August is prime time for Avalon proposals. The water’s warm, the days are long, and sunset stretches out forever. You get this slow, golden fade that gives you way more shooting time than you’d get earlier in the summer. The ocean breeze keeps it comfortable even on hot days, and the sound of the waves adds this natural soundtrack that you just can’t replicate anywhere else.

If you’re thinking about a beach proposal at ICONA Avalon, or anywhere along the Jersey Shore. Here are a few things I always recommend:

  • Book your photographer early. Summer Saturdays at the shore fill up fast, especially August. I typically book proposal dates 4-6 weeks out.
  • Plan for the wind. Onshore breezes are normal. We’ll position everything so it works with the wind, not against it.
  • Get both photo and video. I can’t stress this enough. The video of Adam’s mic’d-up proposal is something they’ll have forever.
  • Let your photographer arrive first. I need to scout the light, set up angles, and get hidden before your partner shows up.
  • Include the family. Adam nailed this. Having everyone waiting to celebrate turns a beautiful moment into an unforgettable one.

The Photos and Video That Tell the Whole Story

Adam and Shayna’s gallery ended up being one of my favorites from that entire summer. The combination of the ICONA Avalon beach setting, the golden sunset light, the genuine surprise, and the family celebration gave us this incredible range of images: from the quiet, emotional close-ups during the proposal to the chaotic, joyful family shots afterward.

And the video? With Adam’s mic picking up every word over the sound of the waves, it’s the kind of film that makes you feel like you’re standing right there in the sand with them. That’s exactly what proposal coverage should do.

Every proposal is different, and I love hearing how people want to make their moment unique. Adam went all-in with the flowers, the mic, the champagne, and the family reveal, and it was incredible. But even a simple, quiet proposal on the beach at sunset can be just as powerful when it’s captured the right way.
