Congress Hall Proposal in Cape May, and the Table We Moved | Kate & James

Kate and James walk hand in hand down a brick garden path lined with hedges at Congress Hall in Cape May.

James called me on a Thursday afternoon. He was proposing on Friday, and the plan he had for photographs had fallen apart days out.

I had Friday. So we planned the whole thing in two phone calls that same afternoon.

The First Plan Was Not Congress Hall

It was Willow Creek Winery, and they were booked with events Friday and Saturday. No reservation, no proposal. Congress Hall was the replacement, and it was the better idea, because James had a table at the Blue Pig at 6:15 and the lawn is about ninety seconds from the dining room.

Arrive early. One drink at the outdoor bar. Walk her out to the lawn. That was the shape of it.

Kate did not want a dining room full of strangers turning around to watch her say yes. James knew that about her without ever having asked directly, which is its own kind of answer after eight years. That is why we did it outside.

There Was an Event Setting Up on the Lawn

On Thursday we were told the back lawn would be clear. On Friday there was a crew out there setting up for something, right across the piece of grass I wanted.

Congress Hall could not have been better about it. I explained what was happening and they let me move one of the tables so I could open up the spot I needed. I have had venues say no to smaller requests than that.

Then I built him a mark. There were wooden stirring sticks nearby, so I laid out a big triangle on the grass, photographed it, and sent it to him so he would know it on sight.

I Pointed at It From Across the Lawn

They sat down at one of the tables. My second shooter and I were set up by the lookout at the big flagpole, far enough off that we were just two more people at Congress Hall on a Friday.

James found me across the lawn. I caught his eye, gave him the signal, and pointed at the triangle. He got up and walked her over.

Kate Landed Between Two Reactions

I keep a running list of the reactions I see. Five of them. Kate came in somewhere between the criers and the mouth coverers, which is a real place to land and I see it more than you would think. Hands come up, eyes go, and the two happen close enough together that you cannot say which started it.

Eight years together and James told me on the phone he was still nervous. I hear that a lot from the couples who have been together the longest, and I like hearing it. After eight years the question still counts.

Then We Walked Congress Hall

Down the pathway alongside the pool first, because the light was doing something there. Then around to the front of the building, which photographs as well as any hotel in New Jersey. Then a little around the back.

I put the drone up too. Straight up and out over the ocean, nothing over the building and nothing over the crew setting up. From up there you get Congress Hall and the water in one frame and two very small people who had just changed their lives standing in the middle of it.

It was one of the nicest September days the shore gave up all season. They made their dinner reservation.

If You Are Planning One at Congress Hall

Put dinner after, not during. A restaurant proposal gives you a room of strangers clapping, and plenty of people do not want that. Congress Hall lets you do it on the lawn and then walk inside to your table, which is the best of both.

Expect the lawn to be in use. It is a working hotel and there is often something going on out there. It is not a problem if somebody scouts it before you arrive.

And if family is meeting you afterward, they hide and they stay put until it is done. Showing up early gives it away, and it puts them in the background of every photograph of the moment. After your partner says yes, bring them all in.
