What the Day Looks Like

Every one of these is a little different, which is the fun of it. Some couples want a real ceremony with an officiant, family, and vows read out loud. Some just want an hour together in a beautiful place and a few portraits worth framing. Here is the shape most of them take.

The ceremony

If you are renewing your vows in front of people, that is the heart of the day. It can be as traditional or as loose as you want. Susan and Norman did theirs under a chuppah, except the chuppah was a tallit held up on four poles by their own family, and saying it to each other again after half a century is not the kind of thing you get a second shot at, so I made sure we caught it.

The portraits

This is the part that surprises couples. You have been together decades, but you have never actually done this, stood together and let someone photograph the two of you the way you are now. I keep it easy and I keep you laughing. The pictures that end up on the wall are almost never the posed ones. They are the ones where you forgot I was there.

The family

By a 50th there is usually a whole family standing there, and that is a gift. Children, grandchildren, the people who exist because you two decided to stick it out. Getting all of them in a frame with you is one of the most valuable things I do that day, because there may not be another day when everyone is dressed up and in the same place on purpose.

The candids

Then there is everything in between. The way you look at each other when no one is watching. The laugh that has not changed in fifty years. This is where the real story lives, and it is the reason I shoot the whole day the way I would shoot a wedding, not just a quick set of posed frames.

Susan and Norman’s 50th at Grounds for Sculpture

I want to show you a real one, because it says more than I can. Susan and Norman came to Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey to mark fifty years of marriage. Same commitment, same two people, five decades of life in between.

We photographed the whole thing. The willows and the Monet bridge over the lily pond. The ceremony under the chuppah, the two of them saying it again after fifty years. Three generations of their family together on that bridge. And in between all of it, the quiet stuff, the two of them laughing at something only they understood, foreheads together, fifty years of inside jokes still going.

Stu and Betsy’s 50th on the Beach in Avalon

I want to show you another one, because no two of these are ever the same. Susan and Norman marked their fifty years in a garden. Stu and Betsy did it with their feet in the sand, down at the beach in Avalon.

They walked down a stretch of beach instead of an aisle, past the old Avalon lifeguard boat, the ocean going soft and grey behind them. Betsy pulled a wrap over her shoulders against the wind off the water and nobody minded one bit. That is the thing about the shore. It does what it wants, and a good day rolls with it.

They said their vows again under a flower arch on the sand, the same promise from fifty years back, out loud one more time. Then they walked up the beach married all over again.

After the ceremony we stole a few minutes for the two of them alone. Fifty years in, and they were still cracking each other up. Those are the frames that end up on the wall, every time.

Back inside, the family had set up a table that got me a little. A lace gown on a stand, their wedding photo beside it, and a gold banner strung across the front that read fifty years blessed. That is the whole story in one table. The dress, the picture, the number.

And then, because a 50th is a party, there was cake. They cut it together and Betsy lost it laughing, the same laugh she probably had the first time around.

Four hours with the heirloom album, up to 60 guests, is $2,995. Six hours with a filmmaker, a film of your full ceremony, and a step up in wall art, up to 100 guests, is $5,995. If you also want a short cinematic edit cut to music, a highlight film starts at $1,800 and can be added to any collection.

How far in advance should we book?

Sooner is better. A milestone year comes around once, and the dates couples want in their anniversary season get claimed first. I also hold my calendar to a small number of weddings and renewals each year, so the earlier you reach out, the better the odds I can save your date.
